So how do I talk to my kids about vaping?

You don’t need a perfect script. You don’t need to know everything about vaping. You just need to stay in the conversation. Ask what they’re seeing, listen more than you talk, and remember: one awkward conversation is better than no conversation.

1. Start with a question.
Ask what they’re seeing, hearing or wondering about.

“Are kids at your school vaping?”

“What do people your age think about vaping?”

2. Listen more than you talk.
Stay curious before jumping into the facts or a lecture.

“Why do you think kids try it?”

“Do most people think vaping is a big deal?”

3. Remember: vaping isn’t what it used to be.

Products, nicotine levels and the way vaping shows up around teens keep changing. You don’t have to pretend you already know it all.

“What kinds of vapes are people using now?”
“Is there anything about vaping that surprised you?”

4. Come back to it.
This doesn’t have to be one big talk. A quick question in the car or something you both see online can be enough to keep the conversation going.
